SUD Clinic Accreditation Preparation — CARF, Joint Commission & ACHC
Accreditation by a nationally recognized body — CARF International, The Joint Commission, or the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) — is increasingly required by state licensing agencies, Medicaid programs, and commercial payers for substance use disorder treatment providers. Beyond the regulatory requirement, accreditation drives genuine quality improvement by aligning your organization with evidence-based standards for clinical care, safety, governance, and continuous improvement.
Preparing for accreditation without guidance is possible — but organizations that attempt it without structured support routinely discover gaps late in the process, struggle to interpret standards language, and find themselves unprepared for the rigor of the surveyor visit. Our accreditation consultants have guided programs through initial accreditation and re-accreditation surveys with accrediting bodies and know how to translate complex standards into practical, achievable organizational changes.

Accrediting Bodies We Support
CARF International
CARF accreditation is the most widely recognized standard for behavioral health and substance use disorder programs. CARF standards cover program design, service delivery, governance, financial health, human resources, and performance improvement. Many states accept or require CARF accreditation as part of their SUD licensure process.
Joint Commission accreditation is widely recognized by hospital systems, health plans, and state agencies. It is particularly relevant for hospital-based SUD programs, residential facilities, and organizations seeking Medicare certification. Joint Commission standards emphasize clinical quality, safety, and systematic performance measurement.
ACHC is an increasingly common accreditation option for behavioral health providers, particularly in states where ACHC is accepted as a deemed status accreditor for Medicaid certification. ACHC standards align closely with CMS Conditions of Participation and offer a structured, supportive survey process.
